Bald Man’s Guide to Sunscreen

Before you joined the bald club, you may not have thought about how much a head of hair protects you from the sun. Protecting your skin from the sun’s UV rays is vital. So, whether you choose a hat or sunscreen, remember to make this a priority.

In this blog, we’ll focus on all the critical components to make a sunscreen effective for your scalp. Here’s what you need to know.

What components should a sunscreen have?

  1. Mineral-based

Mineral sunscreens contain either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (or sometimes both). These are the only sunscreen ingredients that are generally recognized as safe and effective by the FDA. It sits on top of the skin and helps to shield it from harmful UV rays. As a result, you’ll sometimes hear mineral sunscreen referred to as a “physical blocker.”

Mineral-based sunscreens are generally the healthier option compared to chemical sunscreens. They’re the ideal option for children, people with sensitive skin, and people with melasma. Additionally, unlike chemical sunscreen which requires 20 to 30 minutes to absorb into the skin, mineral sunscreens offer immediate protection. They can also be applied on top of other skincare products.

  1. Reef-safe

Did you know that chemical sunscreens are one of the prime suspects for dying reefs? The “Awful Eight” are the toxic ingredients included in most chemical sunscreens that are not considered reef safe. In your search for a sunscreen, seek out an unscented, oxybenzone-free, mineral-based sunscreen that won’t disrupt human hormone function or bleach coral.

Here’s a list of the awful eight:

  • Oxybenzone
  • Octinoxate
  • Octocrylene
  • PABA (Aminobenzoic Acid)
  • Enzacamene
  • Octisalate
  • Homosalate
  • Avobenzone
  1. Face-specific

If possible, look for a product that specifically targets the face. Certain sunscreens contain heavy oils or occlusive and comedogenic ingredients that clog the pores and otherwise wear heavily. Because they can result in pimples in the days following wear, most people like to wear something a bit lighter and oil-free on their face. Especially if you have oily skin, using a face-specific product on your scalp will prevent any irritation or breakouts.
