A Mindful Approach to Weight Loss

At Baldies, we’re all about men becoming the healthier, better versions of themselves. When you go through physical changes (like balding), this can often take a hit on your self-esteem. We’re big believers that fitness can help to energize you and promote confidence. However, if you’re on a larger weight loss journey, then we suggest a mindful approach like the one taught by Nock Collaborative. Let’s look more closely at what it means to take a mindful approach to weight loss.

What is a Mindfulness Approach to Weight Loss?

Researchers from NC State University who analyzed scientific literature on weight loss and mindfulness found that including mindfulness techniques in weight loss programs resulted in success for participants. This is because the extra pounds you’re carrying can often have more to do with your brain than your stomach.

When you eat certain foods, your brain sends signals to the rest of your body telling you that you feel good. Next time you feel bored, lonely, stressed, scared, etc., your brain will send these same signals. Mindfulness can help you understand what’s behind the urge to eat, and it allows you to create new, healthier habits to substitute. This way, you’ll ultimately feel more satisfied with the results.

Now, keep in mind that it can take up to six months for you to gain power over your thoughts and feelings about food. It won’t happen overnight, but it will eventually happen. Just keep with it, and you’ll see that those numbers will eventually change on the scale.

What Does Mindfulness Look Like in a Program?

Nock Collaborative is a 3-pillar approach based on thinking, consumption, and movement that supports sustainable weight loss. The program acknowledges that many have been negatively impacted by the diet cycle. As a result, their practices are based on science, research, and stories from people who have been affected in the past.

They strive to educate people on the “two uncontroversial truths” which are proven to be effective for weight loss. These two truths are…

  • Energy in, energy out
  • Every body thrives by a different method

They also use positive psychology to help you unlearn a method to counter diet culture and teach portion management techniques free from endless tracking that leads to disordered consumption.
